About Burkitt's floral

Loyally serving our customers since 1936!

Our business began as a humble greenhouse run from our family home and was established by Fred Burkitt in 1936. The dining room used to serve as the packing room and the living room as the office. During the war, when gasoline was rationed, Fred would wrap the flowers in perishable paper and put them in a basket with a hot water bottle, cover them with a blanket and pedal to his destination.

During the early days of Burkitt's Flowers, orders were taken by telegram, and Kay, Fred's daughter, recalls helping her father take down orders after school. Back then, many orders were shipped to customers in the country by express train. Fred would advise the dispatcher that he has flowers to deliver and asked the engineer to slow the train down when he was crossing on Sixth Ave E.

Since then, a lot has changed about the store, the greenhouses we abandoned in the mid-'70s because of deterioration. And a new store was built in its place, and flowers were purchased from wholesalers. After Fred's semi-retirement in 1972, his daughter Kay took over the day-to-day operations, and the store was then passed down to Susan, his granddaughter.

Burkitt's Flowers has been hand-delivering premium floral arrangements and gift baskets to help celebrate and commemorate life's special moments since 1936. From birthdays to anniversaries to honouring a loved one, every little "just because" moment in between.
